On 10th February 2024, a brand new lunar cycle begins and with celebrations aplenty, particularly from those who celebrate Chinese New Year, it’s the perfect time to craft your own decorations.

Below, we’ve listed 4 Chinese New Year craft ideas and products that will help you create perfectly themed decorations.

Create your own lucky red envelope

At Chinese New Year, it’s tradition to gift friends and family a red envelope (also known as hóngbāo) filled with money. In Chinese culture, the colour red symbolises good luck and prosperity for the brand new year ahead, however, the traditional envelope is said to come with many rules.

Did you know that only clean, crisp notes are to be put inside a hóngbāo? And the amount inside should never include the number 4? For example, you’d never include £40, or £400, as the pronunciation of the word ‘four’ in Chinese is similar to the word for death.

Our A4 Luxury Red Cardstock Pack is perfect for your red envelope, with 3 different finishes included like mirror card and mat mirror card. Pair your card with The Enveloper Pro Scoreboard to score your envelope from scratch, and decorate it accordingly.

Lantern themed decorations

Lanterns are a staple when it comes to celebrating the Lunar New Year. It's said that they're symbolic, allowing you to let go of your past self and start afresh going into the new year. Set your intentions with your decorations this year with our Lumieres & Lanterns Stamp Set.

Included in this magical stamp set are 7 stamps, including a variety of different hanging lanterns, filled with tealight candles adding a shining light on your creativity. Pair with a Spectrum Noir Harmony Quick-Dry Dye Inkpad in Chinese Red for the perfect shade.

The Year of the Dragon!

According to the Chinese Zodiac, 2024 is the year of the dragon, and what better way to celebrate this than your very own stuffed dragon toy?

Thanks to Threaders and their Dragon Animal Template Set, you can create your dragon with ease, and with full instructions included, all you need is your fabric of choice and a basic sewing kit! This is the perfect gift for children and soft-craft lovers alike.

Create a celebratory card!

Send your best wishes to friends, family and neighbours with a handmade card. Our fabulous community member, Emma Bailey has created this amazing card with elements of florals, gold and reds that really bring an oriental feel to her creation.

To create this, she's used a 5 x 7 card blank, red floral paper from the
Botanic Garden Paper Pad, Red Pearl paper, Gold Gilding Flakes and a Circle Nesting Die. She made the panel flags using a rectangle die and created the gorgeous embossed red circle using the 'small checked embossing folder' from QVC Winter Wishes Autoship.
